Sylvie's Place
for the best in JAZZ
Tim Huskisson - biography
I inherited a stack of 78s from my father at a very young age, and when I wasn't rolling them along the floor or carelessly kneeling or treading on them, I'd play them on my 'wind up' gramophone and absorb much of the music I heard. I found that I could reproduce elements of the music on the piano and ultimately I learned to play entirely by ear. The vintage music that I was exposed to, and indeed the records themselves had a profound influence on my early life. I am convinced that without these 78s I may never have been a musician.
On Saturday afternoons it was a common occurrence for my Mother and Grandmother to visit local 'Jumble-sales'. These were less prosperous times, and even though she was buying items of clothing for the family, she would occasionally return home with some 78s for me. She even brought a portable wind-up gramophone on one occasion. I'm sure this was to replace the existing one that I'd over-wound breaking the main spring!
Began music career playing clarinet with various traditional Jazz bands. Recorded 3 sessions for BBC Radio 2's You, the night, and the music with local Jazz group playing own written arrangements.
- Played with Cy Laurie, Keith Nichols, George Chisholm and bands of Denis Field and Hugh Rainey.
- Received much encouragement from Digby Fairweather and was included as one of his Essex Radio All Stars for their 1981 Jazz Cruise to Sweden
Although a Jazz aficionado, I actually spent most of the last 25 years involved in popular entertainment and Musical Theatre, and usually as a Keyboardist.
I wouldn't change anything from my 'showbiz' days which invariably took me to great heights, and gave me the opportunity to work with so many gifted musicians and entertainers.
Nevertheless, leaving this career in 2000 enabled me to rediscover the Jazz that had originally inspired me to be a musician in the first place.
