MR. ACKER BILK MBE MA
A Tribute Night to Acker Bilk and his Music was held on 21st April 2009 at The Grand Hotel (Thistle) Bristol by The Variety Club of Great Britain. This follows the extensive career of Acker over the years and the many accolades he has received. Some of which are below.
On the 1st November 2008, whilst performing with his Paramount Jazz Band at The Blackheath Halls in London Acker Bilk was presented with The Worshipful Company of Musicians Silver Medalfor Lifetime Achievement.
Acker is honoured to receive this award which joins others he has received recently including hisMBE for Services to the Music Industry which Acker received from Her Majesty The Queen in 2001; BMI Award in 2004 as a Songwriter for performances exceeding four million of his number Stranger on the Shore; BBC Jazz Awards in 2005 for his unique contribution to Jazz in the UK; Also in 2005 Acker accepted an Honorary Master of Arts Degree from Bristol University:
Besides these, of course, are his awards for recordings and sales of Stranger on the Shore in the 1960s and onwards, and Aria in the 1970's, and jazz numbers such as Summer Set, Creole Jazz, and In a Persian Market - too numerous for me to list here.
Acker, who has been through two different bouts of cancer and come through well, does charity work in the Somerset for Cancer concerns, and has spear-headed the 2008 campaign for flu jabs for the elderly in Bristol and surrounding areas.
Acker, who reached the magnificent age of 80 in January 2009, has been performing for 60 years, and has toured the World many times, and although pacing himself now, still tours with his Paramount Jazz Band.
